Decluttering can be amazing for people who are trying to “spring clean” their homes. Clutter is as pointless as it sounds. It simply takes up precious real estate inside of your living space. If you want to declutter your home the right way, there are numerous questions you should pose in advance. Declutter is a process that calls for a lot of careful planning.

When Was the Last Time I Used This?

If you haven’t used something in months or perhaps even years, then it’s a pretty safe bet to assume that you never will again. If you come across a neon pink sweater that you haven’t worn since your high school days, then you should probably donate it or dispose of it entirely. If you come across an electric guitar that’s totally broken, you should throw it out without hesitation.

Am I Keeping This for the Right Reasons?

People should also question their incentives for keeping things. If you have something and can’t figure out why it’s still in your life, you should ask yourself why it’s around. You may have something that’s functional and that may be useful later on. You may have something that’s nostalgic and simply making you long for the past. If you’re holding on to something unnecessary for sentimental reasons, it may be time to say goodbye to it.

Does This Item Still Work?

You should test out belongings prior to determining whether or not they belong in the circular file. If you come across several garage door openers in the middle of the floor in your walk-in closet, you should see if they’re actually functional. If they’re not, then it’s a no-brainer. They belong in the trashcan with the rest of the things you no longer need, plain and simple.

Who Actually Owns This?

The last thing you want to do is make the mistake of throwing out or donating something that actually belongs to someone else in your household. That’s why you need to clear everything prior to taking action. Find out who owns a certain item you come across. Confirm that fact with the owner as well. You shouldn’t do anything until you’re 100 percent certain.

Decluttering can be a brave thing for anyone to do. It can be hard to part with things that are seemingly irreplaceable. Although decluttering can be tough, it’s essential for people who want to reside in tidy and welcoming homes.
