Relocation can involve many steps, but if you have a method for keeping them all in order, it doesn’t have to be difficult. A moving checklist is one way to make sure you’re tackling the tasks that need doing, and these seven steps should help.

1) Pick a Date for Your Big Day
The first thing you will want to do when it comes to swapping one home for another is to choose a day that will work well for the big move. In order to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible, it can be a good idea to schedule it anywhere from Monday through Thursday. These are the days on which it is most likely that businesses will be open if you need them (e.g., banks and the post office).

2) Communicate with Utility Companies
There are certain services, like heating, electricity and cable/Internet that will need to be coordinated. Call the providers you have and tell them your date of departure so they can cut off service to your current home. Then, let them know when you’re arriving at your new place so they can get you all set up for new service.

3) Notify the Post Office
This is an easy one, because you don’t necessarily even have to go to the post office to change your address. You may be able to fill out all the required forms online.

4) Notify Others of Your Move
This isn’t limited to friends, family and colleagues. You should also tell gyms you attend, mail order movie organizations, magazines you subscribe to, your bank, etc. This will ensure that no important correspondence goes unseen in the future.

5) Research Your Options for Relocation
Figure out if you want to go DIY or enlist the help of local movers. Devising a budget and then getting quotes from various companies for their services can help you narrow down the choices.

6) Purchase Any Supplies You Will Need
The kinds of supplies you’ll need vary depending on the method of relocating you choose. However, usually you will need boxes, tape, razor blades or scissors and some kind of packing material (bubble wrap or newspaper usually work fine).

Get these things together so it’s easy to start packing.

7) Begin Purging and Packing
The next step is to figure out what you need to bring and what you don’t. Go through each room in your home and make a pile of what you don’t need and what you do. Then, toss, donate, sell or give away the unwanted items and start packing what’s left.
