Beliefs and Tales of the Canadian Dakota By Wilson D. Wallis Volume 1 of the Santee Dakota Indian Legends Spider looks calmly at all of the fiercest creatures and goes after all of them. This time he is going after Bear.. . Bear started to laugh at him: "You are a poor little speck of a thing and wish to talk as if you were larger than the whole world "Spider retorted: 'Even though I am so small I can do anything to any creature larger than myself" [Spider] took his rope and wound it around Bear's legs and tied it so that he could scarcely move.. and walked away. ---from the tale "Spider and Bear" Beliefs and Tales of the Canadian Dakota presents traditional wisdom about the natural and supernatural worlds as related by Dakota Indian elders in Manitoba, Canada, to Wilson D. Wallis in 1914. By sharing this knowledge, the elders preserved part of their ancient heritage for the benefit of future generations. WILSON D. WALLIS (1886-1970) was an anthropologist who specialized in North American Indian studies. A graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, he taught for many years. Wallis also served as head of the department of anthropology at the University of Minnesota from 1938 until his retirement in 1954. | |
