Zurich is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and has an ancient history dating back to its founding by the Romans in 15BC.

While it is a spectacular city for touring and soaking up the Swiss culture, it’s ideally located for some excellent trips to the countryside and surrounding areas.

So, what are the best day trips you can take from Zurich?

Alpamare

It’s only about half an hour from the city, but it’s an absolute must, especially if you are travelling with the family, or even if you’re not! It’s Europe’s largest indoor water park.

It has ten water slides that have a combined total length of one-and-a-half kilometres. After all of the excitement then you retreat to the spa and sauna to relax.

Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

This is an incredible full day trip that takes you up incredible heights and to an amazing landscape that it eternally shrouded in snow.

Not only will you be making a stop at the world’s highest railway station, from the Ice Palace and Sphinx Observation Terrace you’ll get an unforgettable view of Europe’s longest glacier, the Aletsch Glacier, which is part of the UNESCO Jungfrau-Aletsch world heritage site.

Lucerne

South of Zurich is the charming town of Lucerne, where legend has it that William tell shot the apple from his son’s head. There are wonderful historical artefacts and sights such as The Chapel Bridge which is one of the oldest wooden bridges in Europe.

Paraglide from Pilatus and Rigi

What better way is there to see the amazing scenery than drifting through the crisp air of Rigi. It’s only 40 minute from Zurich, and even less from Lucerne so there’s no excuse to miss out on this truly unique experience.

Basel

The beautiful city of Basel is on the border with France and Germany, and is the artistic capital of Switzerland.

If you like to walk around cities this is perfect for you as it the old town is mainly just for pedestrians and every Saturday there is a fruit and vegetable market outside the Rathaus, the town hall. Daytrips are ideal if you are planning on moving around a lot.

Zurich Airport hotels are perfectly located to the north of the city, making it a much more convenient starting point for visiting places such as Basel and other towns close to the German border.
