Cleaning with Ketchup
If the precious metal setting is looming a little tarnished and is in need of a polish, ketchup is something that most of us have available in our homes, and it can get great results as well. Get a small bowl and put some ketchup in it, then get your jewellery and place it in the bowl for a few minutes, making sure that the items are fully covered. If there is a patterned surface then get an old toothbrush and work the ketchup in with that. Do not leave it on too long, a couple of minutes should be good, then rinse it off thoroughly and dry it. Your jewellery should be shining like new.
If your diamonds have lost that sparkle that they once had, then denture tablets are a great way to get it back. Place a denture tablet in a cup or glass of water and then add your diamond jewellery. Leave this in for a few minutes and then bring out the jewellery and rinse thoroughly before drying. Before you know it your diamonds will be sparkling like the day that you bought them.
Vinegar & Baking Soda
Both of these products are great for cleaning up tarnished silver. You can either mix half a cup of white vinegar with a couple of tablespoons of baking powder and leave your silver to soak for a couple of hours, or you can mix half a cup of baking soda with 2 tablespoons of water to make a creamy thick paste. You apply the paste with a damp sponge and then clean off and buff. If you are looking to clean gold with this then you should apply some baking powder to the surface first. Make sure that you do not use this cleaning technique with pearls of gem stones as this can affect the finish and also the glue used to hold them in place.
Club Soda is a simple way to get your diamond, rubies or other precious stones to sparkle like new. All you need to do is place them in a glass or cup of club soda and leave them to soak overnight. Then take them out and dry them and give them a quick buff with a cloth. They will be sparkling like new in no time at all.
You can apply a little bit of toothpaste to a toothbrush and use this to rum into your precious stones such as diamonds. Once you have brushed them vigorously, taking care to not loosen them from their setting, take a damp cloth and wipe the residue away. Toothpaste doesn’t only get your teeth sparkling!
Vodka is not only the favourite tipple of millions of people, but it is also great at cleaning glass jewellery or jewellery with crystalline gemstones. It may seem like a waste to some people, but you can simply dip your diamond ring into a glass of vodka and wipe it clean. The vodka gets rid of all the grime and residue that builds up over time. It is also a good way to clean your glasses as well if you wear them, although it is not good for your contact lenses at all! Just be careful not to try using this method on jewellery which is not a crystal.
