Looking outside during a horrible storm can give you the chills. You thank the man upstairs that you’re not stuck out there in the blowing wind and pelting rain. However, you need to remember that the outside of your home is always exposed to the elements. After every major storm, it’s a good idea to consider inspecting your home for any damage.

How to Inspect Your Home After A Large Storm

Look Over Your Siding

During nasty storms with high winds, even the smallest object can damage the siding on your home. Take a moment and walk around your entire home. Assess all the siding and see if there are any visible dents or if any of the siding seems to be out of place. Dents can be easily replaced with a sealant. Siding should be clicked back into place to help protect your home from unwanted moisture damage.

Assess Your Roof

When a storm hits, it can cause damage to your roofing materials, and it can expose any previous issues. Start by assessing your residential roof by looking at the shingles. If you notice that any shingles have fallen off or they seem to be overturned, then it’s an indication that you need to fix that area. You’ll also want to check your attic to see if there are any water spots that are showing. The storm’s excess moisture should easily let you see any leaks in your roof.

Check Around All Your Windows

The obvious first step here is going to be to look at your window panes to identify any broken glass. Slightly push on each pane and ensure that it’s still secure. If the glass looks okay, then you need to assess the window’s surroundings. You’re looking for any moisture in the area that could’ve gotten in from the storm or dents that occurred from objects hitting the exterior window frame.

Look Over Your Trees

The last thing that you want to do to protect your home after a storm is to look at its surroundings. It’s very common for storms to damage branches. Just because they didn’t fall during the storm doesn’t mean that they won’t soon. Assess if any tree branches were broken from the storm and remove them before they fall on your home.

Large storms can wreak havoc on homes of all sizes. After a storm hits your home, it’s best to use the tips above to assess various components that may have been damaged. The sooner you identify the damage, the less it will cost to repair.
