Your lawn is the entryway to your home. When visitors arrive it will be one of the first things they notice. Studies have shown that a well-maintained lawn can help boost the value of a home significantly. Aside from that, the aesthetic value of a good lawn is something that brings comfort to many homeowners. Whether you are a new homeowner or just looking to learn about lawn care we have a guide to the best lawn care practices for maximum curb appeal.

Seed and Feed Your Lawn in the Fall Months

Your lawn is most vulnerable right after the summer months. This is due to a combination of family use, hot temperatures, and reduced watering levels. Since your lawn takes such a big hit in the summer the best time to patch it up is in the early fall. Hiring a good tree service around this time, like Pete & Ron’s Tree Service, Inc., is also a must.

The best way to do this is to use a hand rake to loosen up the soil below your lawn. This aerates the soil and allows good critters to get into the soil and strengthen it. Remember that your soil is a living organism and needs air to survive- this is why we turn compost piles.

After loosening the soil you can reseed with your lawn of choice. Sometimes you will need to reseed the entire lawn, other times just the patches that tend to develop over a hot summer. If you are covering patches remember to reseed with the same varietal as the previous year.

Add Compost to Your Lawn

There is a good reason why gardeners and farmers refer to compost as brown or black gold. There are very few substances on this planet that will get a garden or lawn to grow like good compost. This substance is filled to the brim with the nutrients your lawn craves. Almost all professional gardeners maintain some form of composting.

This can be a great way to get rid of excess leaves as well- instead of blowing them into the street or your neighbor’s yard you can put them to use making your lawn a beautiful green tint. Compost can also be purchased in many different places and some establishments even give it away. Check your local gardening pages for more information.

Lawn care is not rocket science, but it is surprisingly complex. Maintaining a balance between all of the elements of your yard is challenging, but at the end of the day very rewarding.
