Drunk driving is an enormous problem in the United States, and causes thousands of deaths a year. It is especially dangerous as it has the power to ruin multiple lives through one thoughtless decision. While it is no secret that drunk driving is an invariably bad decision, many choose to ignore this fact, or are not aware of alternative decisions. Although drunk driving should be avoided at all costs, occasionally situations come up where it may seem necessary. However, this is not the case, and the situation can be avoided by observing safe drinking practices, knowing alternatives to driving yourself, or both.

The Ramifications

Driving drunk can easily result in a multitude of problems, both immediately and down the line. Simply because someone has driven drunk before with no repercussions does not mean that it can be engaged in with no damages. In the best case scenario, a drunk driver will hurt no one, although they may face some very real problems for themselves. Drunk driving can easily result in court costs, a heightened insurance premium, a suspended license, and incarceration. Depending on the terms of your employment, it may even result in termination, and be an issue in finding future jobs.

In the event that someone is hurt as a result of driving drunk, the consequences become immediately more serious. Although the driver may only injure themselves, they will face many of the aforementioned problems, in addition to medical costs and perhaps an inability to work. If someone is killed, then then there will be emotional turmoil to deal with. Not only will the driver’s life come apart, but the family of the victim will go through one of the worst experiences imaginable. Jail time is almost guaranteed in instances such as these, and may be accompanied by a civil lawsuit.

The Alternatives

Although drunk driving is undoubtably a catalyst for a range of unpleasant consequences, some engage in it simply because they see no alternative, or at least not an “easy” one. However, there are a variety of options. The easiest is having a designated driver, whether it is someone you are with or someone that you can call to come pick you up. Taxis are also a universal option, although money can be an issue. If this is the case, it is important to know that many bars and nightclubs will call a cab and cover the fare for patrons who have had too much to drink. While these are all viable options, the best one of all is to not drink in excess.

Safe Drinking Tips

Simply because you are driving should not preclude you from having a couple of drinks. However, it is imperative that you observe safe drinking habits in order to avoid an inadvertent drunk driving fiasco. Knowing your limit is by far the most important thing to keep in mind, which can be helped along by drinking slowly and consuming water with or in between drinks. It is also vital to note that simply because you do not feel drunk does not mean you are not legally too impaired to drive. If there is even the slightest doubt, wait it out or call a friend.
