Eerectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition among men, especially those who are middle-aged or older. Defined as being unable to achieve or maintain an erection during sexual activity, ED is caused by vascular damage in 70 percent of cases. Erections can also be affected by diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, which can reduce the flow of blood in and out of the penis. Obesity is thought to contribute to the problem because it lowers the level of testosterone in a man’s body. There are various ways of treating ED, which are outlined below.

Viagra

Viagra is a relatively new ED treatment. Available in pill form, the drug works by increasing blood flow to the penis and blocking a certain enzyme that causes a chemical breakdown when the penis is stimulated. This leads to a longer-lasting erection and a greater ability to complete the sex act.

Vacuum Pump

This method for treating ED utilizes a pump with a band attached to it that men can use to achieve an erection. The pump stimulates the penis and causes it to fill with blood. Once an erection occurs, a ring can be put in place to help maintain it. This approach to ED has been around for many years.

Shock Therapy

The Journal of Sex Medicine recently published the results of a study that showed sound wave therapy applied to the penis worked as an effective ED treatment. Nearly 30 percent of the men who underwent this therapy showed vast improvement in sexual function. The study did not elaborate on why the sound waves work.

Injections

Injections of prostaglandin E1, a chemical that occurs naturally, directly in the tissue of the penis allow for the widening of blood vessels and improvement in erections. It is thought to work by causing the muscle in the walls of blood vessels to relax, letting blood flow in more easily.

Pellets

Another approach to the use of prostaglandin E1 is through the use of pellets. The tiny objects, which measure only millimeters in size, are inserted into the penis through the use of a very slim rod. They have the same effect as an injection, opening up the flow of blood into the penis and allowing for a normal erection.

Each treatment approach to erectile dysfunction has its positive and negative points. Any man who is suffering from ED should consult with a doctor before beginning any type of treatment regimen. Testing for blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure should be conducted to rule out any underlying medical condition. Only a doctor can determine what is causing ED and how best to treat it.
