This article is aimed at students, and looks to give them a number of ideas for simple recipes without living on basic meals and leftovers.

Student Life

It is somewhat uncanny how the usual mocking of students actually points at factors that are true to life. It does take students longer to drink a pint of lager, they do often look as if they are homeless, and they are usually enviably skinny because of their lack of nutrition.

Life doesn’t always need to be that way, though, at least not on the food front. There are a number of recipes that can be easily thrown together in a simple manner, that are ideal for satisfying your hunger and nutritional needs, as well as the added bonus that they can be easily made en masse for everyone in your student accommodation to enjoy!

What are some of the best meals for students?

Sausage Casserole

This really is as easy as it gets for students. Many students end up becoming vegetarians almost by default because they cannot afford meat, however it is easy to get hold of quality sausages at a reasonable price.

Instead of wasting them by eating them solo as part of a fry up or even in a sandwich, make them the central part of a tasty casserole recipe. The best part of this is that you can just throw them in the oven with your favourite vegetables and that is all that you need to do.

Vegetable Stew

Another recipe that is easy to put together, and a perfect solution of there are a few of you sharing a house and you can club together to buy a slow cooker. Just throw chopped vegetables and stock into the slow cooker, and leave for a few hours to create a nutritious, healthy, filling dish that will not cost you the Earth to create.

If you want something even more filling, you could even add extra stock halfway through and add some risotto rice to give another slant to what is already a great recipe.

While meal ideas are always great for students, how can they shop smarter to ensure that they never spend more than they need to?

Late Night Shopping

Instead of going to the pub one evening in the week, why not go to the supermarket instead. Towards the end of the day there will be loads of reductions and things that are near to date expiry. As long as you have a decent freezer you can easily leave stuff in there and get it out as and when you want to eat it.

If you live in a student house, ensure that you pool resources rather than living separate lives – you will find it makes you all better off.
