If you have insomnia or problems sleeping, a simple answer to your problem could be to change your mattress.  While insomnia generally has other underlying causes, sleeping on a mattress with poor support can worsen your insomnia.

In Insomniac, Gayle Green explains, “Sleep is the fuel of life.  It’s nourishing; it’s restorative.  And when you are deprived of it, you are really deprived of a basic kind of sustenance.”

Research has revealed that if there are underlying reasons for your insomnia, those reasons will need to be dealt with first and foremost.  Yet, sleeping on a good quality mattress will help you be able to rest comfortably and, hopefully, get a good night’s sleep.  Some reasons for insomnia are:

Psychological causes such as anxiety, stress and depression

Physical causes such as hormonal changes, pain, genetics and sleep apnea

Medical conditions such as asthma, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease

Temporary events such as jet lag, medication, overuse of caffeine and environmental causes

If you are experiencing any of the above causes of insomnia, you should consult with your physician for guidance.  Even so, your mattress may not be giving your body the proper support it needs throughout the night.  It may be time to purchase a new mattress to help you deal with your insomnia.

There are many different types of mattresses on the market today.  When shopping for a new mattress, it is best to have an understanding of what type of support your body needs.  For those with medical conditions involving the musculoskeletal system, a mattress that provides firm support yet soft comfort is ideal.  Sleeping with correct posture is important to anyone who suffers from back aches, muscle aches and joint pain.  You can achieve correct sleeping posture by sleeping on memory foam mattresses or latex mattresses.

If you are being regularly seen by a physical therapist for any medical condition related to your musculoskeletal system, talk to your therapist about what type of mattress firmness would be the most beneficial to you.  The comfort level of a mattress is not to be confused with the support level.  The support level is the firmness of the mattress and is how your body is supported.  The comfort level of a mattress is how the bedding materials feel as you lie on the mattress.

You may be asking how you can tell if your current mattress needs to be replaced.  One of the biggest tell-tale signs is how your body feels in the mornings.  When you awaken in the morning after a refreshing night of sleep you should feel rejuvenated and your body should be free of aches and pains that can be caused during the night when sleeping without correct posture.  You can inspect your mattress for any dents or areas in which the mattress has caved in.  You will need to pay close attention to the sides of the mattress, especially if you sit along the edge of the mattress during your daily routines.  Also, if your mattress is one that needs to be flipped and/or rotated on a regular basis, ask yourself if you have kept up with this important maintenance process with your current mattress.  If you have not, it may be wise to invest in a new mattress.  The average life span of a mattress can be between eight and ten years.  Think back to when you purchased your current mattress to get an idea of whether your mattress has outlived the regular time span for a mattress or not.  Another sign that can tell you if your mattress is of low quality, is that you tend to sleep better in a different bed such as at a hotel or as a guest in someone’s home.

When shopping for your new mattress, you will find many brands such as Sealy, Rest Assured and Silentnight mattresses.  It is important to understand that mattresses from different brand names may appear to be the same in quality but may be vastly different from each other in construction methods.  There is no industry standard in regards to how many coils are in a coil spring mattress, for example.

In addition to the mattress, you should inspect your bed and bed frame as well.  The bed frame needs to adequately support a mattress.  Cheap double beds can be purchased if you feel your current bed will not provide a new mattress with a supportive base.

Many people who experience trouble sleeping could attribute their lack of sleep to their mattress.  If you have insomnia yet have no underlying causes or reasons for it, your mattress may be the culprit.
