El Dorado Park Golf Course is a sparkling jewel in the Los Angeles County Parks System. Accomplished golfers will enjoy the challenges offered by a course that hosts the Long Beach Open each year. There are multiple sets of tees so that golfers of every skill level can enjoy this beautiful championship course.

Quick History

In 2008, GolfLink ranked El Dorado Park Golf Course among its top 100 courses. The Poa greens are usually in decent shape and most golfers say that they putt true. This is a course that most patrons respect, and as a result ballmarks are repaired more often than on some of the area’s other public golf courses. The fairways feature a rye/kikuyu blend. The sand in the bunkers is soft, so you can use your sand wedge the way that it was intended to be used.

From the back tees, El Dorado Park Golf Course plays just under 6500 yards long. It is a traditional par 72 test with four par threes and four par fives. From the Blues the slope is a very respectable 126. Women do not get a big break at El Dorado. That fact is illustrated by the very high women’s slope of 132.

Golf Course Features

The topography at El Dorado includes low-lying areas that include numerous water hazards and giant trees that have grown up around them. Large boulders line the water in places to offer aesthetic pleasure as well as an occasional crazy ricochet. All the water offers a haven for certain bird species as well as turtles. The tall, established trees add to the scenic vistas, but they can give you fits if you’re hitting the ball sideways too often. The low-lying areas make for an occasional mud ball, and all that moisture can make the rough especially challenging in places.

The water hazards are everywhere. They come into play on about half the holes. Water really impacts a round at El Dorado because it hugs the greens on four holes: 7, 11, 15, and 18. Hopefully you’ll be able to block all that blue out of your mind as you fire your irons into the green. Getting it wet by the 18th green will not leave you in the best of moods as you depart.

The good news is that you can ease into your game at El Dorado because the first seven holes are all modest in length. Then suddenly the eighth thru the tenth are all long. Number eight is a 423 yard par four. Number nine is a long par three just under 200 yards. The tenth hole is a lengthy par five measuring 543 yards.

Need to Practice?

Hitting off of grass is possible on the range Tuesday thru Friday. There are not only practice greens for putting and chipping, but there is a practice bunker as well. The clubhouse amenities are nice. The restaurant and bar can handle about 150 guests. The snack shack out on the course is well placed and accessible on four of the holes.
