Did you know that exercising more can actually help you get paid more at work?

A new study from researchers at Cleveland State University, which was published in the Journal of Labor Research, found that employees who exercise on a regular basis earn a 9 percent higher salary than employees who don’t work out regularly.

The study was conducted by using the “propensity-score matching” technique, where participants are judged on whether they fit the profile of someone who exercises, including factors like age, education level, and whether they played sports in high school.

It makes perfect sense that exercise would lead to better performance at the office. Other studies have shown that working out leads to increased mental function, higher energy levels, and improved mood – all of which are aspects of successful employees.

Another thing to take into consideration is that employees who are unhealthy and overweight actually cost their companies more money. That’s because these workers are more likely to get sick, so employers are forced to pay more for their health insurance.

That being said, a lot of employers offer benefits and incentives to workers who want to get or stay healthy. Your company might offer anything from gym membership reimbursements and wellness programs to yearly health stipends and nutrition counseling.

If for some reason your employer doesn’t offer any sort of encouragement for working out, you should take into account that the price of working out pretty much pays for itself, especially when you figure in how much your time is worth, how much more you could be earning at work, and the money you’ll be saving on doctors’ visits and medicine.

Still not convinced? Check out these five great reasons why you should look at the best treadmills and start working out today:

  1. Gain energy – Working out on a regular basis can give you tremendous amounts of energy, especially if you work out first thing in the morning. It’s a great way to get your mind and body going for the day or to unwind and de-stress after a long day.
  2. Sleep better – At the same time that working out gives you more energy, it also helps you sleep better. Once it’s time to hit the sheets, your body will be worn down from your day and your workout, so you’ll sleep better than you ever have before.
  3. Eat healthier – Most people who workout regularly naturally want to eat healthier. That’s mainly because you become more conscious about what certain foods can do to your body and how much effort it takes to work off bad food.
  4. Look better – De-stressing through a good workout, sleeping better, and eating better will do wonders for your overall physical appearance. Aside from simply slimming down, you’ll also notice a difference in your hair, skin, and nails.
  5. Feel better – Everything listed above will help you feel healthier and better overall. You’ll be more confident about your habits and the way you look, which always goes miles for your self-esteem.
