What makes a Christmas morning truly great and a joy for everyone? Here are five top ways to make it extra special.

1. Waiting just a bit longer for presents

We all feel excited when we know there are presents to open, and sometimes the excitment is too much and before you know it, you’re surrounded in torn wrapping paper and it’s only 7.30 in the morning. However, you can actually make your Christmas morning more special by waiting a little bit longer before opening presents. Chatting to your family and doing other activities before present-opening helps to delay it so the excitment isn’t over too quickly. Also, taking it in turns to open presents is a much nicer way of drawing it out and savouring each moment properly.

2. Music

Having something like Classic FM with Christmas carols on is a lovely way to create that Christmas atmosphere, and wonderful excited feeling. However, stations like that do play quiet depressing carols sometimes which while they might be soft and relaxing, can lower your mood, especially if you’re quite an emotional person. Why not create your own Christmas morning compilation CD or itunes playlist, so that you can have music you know will keep everyone upbeat and excited for what’s to come? Try to hunt down some lesser-known Christmas tunes so that people don’t get bored with the same old Christmas music we’ve heard year-in year-out.

3. Breakfast

A special Christmas breakfast is an absolute must. It’s a bit of an anti-climax to wake up on Christmas morning faced with the usual cereal or toast. So do something different – why not have pancakes, croissants or pastries to make a delicious and exciting start to the day? It really does help make the morning special, fueling everyone up for the fun before lunch time.

4. Going for a walk

Just getting out of the house for a bit freshens your head and the increased physical activity releases endorphins to boost your mood. Even if it’s only for 10 minutes, you get to see the happiness of others and exchange Christmas greetings which will make the morning more special. When you return to your home, you’ll feel rejuvenated and ready for the rest of the day, and of course tackling that big dinner!

5. Playing games

If you’re trying to delay present opening till the afternoon, why not select one present that may be opened, which you know could be used there and then? Such as a board game or Wii computer game that everyone can join in with. This way, everyone’s kept busy and happy and there’s still the rest of the presents to look forward to.
