So you have purchased a domain name for a registration service. Finally, you have an online address for yourself. But this is just the start of the road. There are still a number of things you need to do before your site is up and running.

domain

The first step you need to take is to get an account with a website/blog storing site. A domain name is only an address. This address has to be linked to a website or a blog. The website or blog is a page with content until it is linked to the domain name. In order to link it to your domain name, you will need a website/blog storing site to store the content.

When selecting a website/blog storing site, always look for the tools and controls offered by the site for your blog or webpage. Also, look for the security offered by the website/blog storing site when it comes to securing your content from hackers and other unscrupulous individuals. Always compare various website/blog storing sites before selecting the best service for you.

Next, let us look at the steps needed to link the blog/website with the domain or domænenavne as known in Danish.

  • Start by finding the server details:

Every website/blog storing site uses a set of servers to store the actual page. In order to link the domain to your website, you will need the details of the servers where your page is stored. However, please understand that there is a difference between the URL associated with your blog or webpage and the server details.

In the server world, each server is identified by a set of numbers for example 123.1.2.2. These numbers are called Internet Protocol addresses. The servers are also allocated a domain name system (DND) address. An example of a DNS address is zz.abcd.com or zz2.abcd.com. The best way to get these details is to enquire with the vendor who is providing the website/blog storing site.

  • Manually link the website:

Once you have the server information, the next step is to link the website manually. Start by logging into the registration service’s website. Next, you should look for options on the site that will allow you to enter the server details. This varies from vendor to vendor. Always look for names like ‘Manage your Domain’ or ‘Your Domain’. Next, select the particular details you wish to change.

Once you enter the domain that you want to change, look for words like DNS (domain name system). You will see 2 or 3 boxes with numbers or letters mentioned in them. These are the details, which you have to change. You will have to enter the details of the server next to words like Server 1 or Main Server and Server 2 or Secondary Server. To borrow the above example, zz.abcd.com will be Server 1 and zz2.abcd.com will be Server 2. Next, apply or save these settings, close the page and exit the domain registration service.

  • Tip 1 – Never make such settings all on your own. Always contact the registration service and ask them to guide you.
  • Tip 2 – Once the settings are changed, inquire with your vendor how long it will take before the changes are reflected on the actual website.

Once you have linked your webpage or blog with your domain, you will then have to focus on advertising and promotion of your blog or webpage.
