For many people, summer might mean scrabbling around the back of your wardrobes to dig out the old faithful shorts and maxi dresses, however, for the style-conscious, the volatile fashion scene requires a trip to the shops. After studying the latest editions of their fashion magazines, they are inspired by what the top celebrities are donning this season.

Bright Red
Summer 2012 has seen daringly bold colours worn by the most brave fashionistas, but particularly, bright red has hit the fashion scene in a big way. You can go casual with red jeans, matched with a nautical top (more on the nautical trend later), but it’s best worn as a simple day dress for an understated, elegant style.

Think Marilyn Monroe for a beautiful 1950’s look, or follow current Vampire Diaries star, Nina Dobrev, and wear bright red in the form of a belted maxi dress.

Florals
Florals never seem to go out of fashion in summertime. For this innocent and feminine look, you can follow Chloe Grace Moretz with a stunning, floral, pencil dress. If you like style with a punch, you too can wear florals with a pair of tough and rugged, floral, denim shorts, matched with a dark t-shirt and high-top trainers.

Floppy Hats
What are we without our accessories? Fashion and costume jewellery is a must for any outfit, and so are floppy hats this season. Perfect for keeping the sun off your face and timelessly classic when worn right, Sarah Jessica Parker has been seen supporting a floppy hat, and so has the iconic model, Kate Moss.

Nautical Stripes
We promised we’d get round to this. Thanks to Coco Chanel, the Breton stripes have dominated the catwalks for decades. Covered with a blazer, like actress Rose Byrne, nauticals really work as a casual but chic alternative to more feminine styles. Pair with skinny jeans and sandals for a laid-back and cool look.

Claimed by the French as one of their signature styles, you can feminise your nauticals with a bit of red lipstick and a beret. Audrey Hepburn was a great fan of the nautical style.

Cut-Outs
Although Rihanna has been parading around in nothing but a crop top this summer, we don’t all have her washboard abs. Instead, a chic alternative to crop tops are the demure cut-outs available which lightly show off your midriff. More elegant styles involve lace overlay for that hint of skin. Actress, Cobie Smulders, from ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ rocked these gentle cut-outs in a white dress to accentuate her even tan.

Flaunting a little bit of skin around the shoulders and chest is a trend that has been worn by Vanessa Hudgens and Krysten Ritter this season. This style works for both dresses and casual tops for cheeky show of flesh. Always apply suncream to the exposed skin, so you don’t end up with strange tan lines that make you look like a human jigsaw puzzle.
